Processing And Application Of Rice Straw Liquid Smoke For Pest And Disease Control In Sri-Method Rice Cultivation By The Lestari Farmer Group Lubuklinggau City
Abstract
A community service initiative focused on the production and application of rice straw liquid smoke for pest and disease control in SRI-method rice cultivation was conducted with the Lestari Farmer Group in Lubuklinggau City. The project was initiated following field surveys and discussions between the community service team and the farmer group. Observations revealed issues regarding rice straw waste which was typically burned in the fields and rice crop pests. The initiative aimed to introduce the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method, promote eco-friendly technology, utilize rice straw waste to produce liquid smoke, and plant refugia crops for integrated pest and disease management. These efforts sought to achieve healthy rice production, environmental sustainability, and safe-to-consume products. The project partner was the Lestari Farmer Group, located in Karang Ketuan Urban Village, South Lubuklinggau II District, Lubuklinggau City, South Sumatra. The implementation strategy involved field observations, the design of liquid smoke production equipment, extension services and training using the Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) approach, and ongoing mentoring. Results indicate that participating community members successfully adopted and applied these practices on their farms, demonstrating increased knowledge and skills regarding eco-friendly rice cultivation.
