A Community-Based Development Approach to Transforming Abandoned Land into Productive Space in Lontong Pancur
Abstract
Abandoned land and limited waste management restrict the use of space in Lontong Pancur, Pangkalpinang City. This community service programme aimed to describe the application of Community-Based Development (CBD) in the WONG PANTANG programme to develop productive community spaces. A participatory approach involved social mapping, joint planning, capacity building, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. Information was collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and evaluative discussions and analysed descriptively. Reported outputs included the establishment of the Hydroponic Group and BALORE (Bangka Lopan Recycle), involvement of 25 direct and approximately 150 indirect beneficiaries, and the construction of one greenhouse with six hydroponic installations. Activities included vegetable production, catfish farming, herbal cultivation, composting, and inorganic waste sorting. Part of the catfish harvest was used as an ingredient for supplementary feeding at the local integrated health service post. The programme demonstrates the use of previously abandoned land and the development of group activities. However, changes in income, nutritional status, and long-term sustainability were not measured. Improved production records, group governance, infrastructure maintenance, and marketing are needed to support programme continuity.
